Traditional Style Mixteca Indian Mexican Rebozo

22a

This is a genuine Mexican rebozo of the style worn by Mixteca Indian women - the so-called "Marias" that you see all over Mexico, but who actually come from the Western part of the sate of Oaxaca. These rebozos are usually quite expensive, but I get them at a fairly reasonable price from some "Marias" who travel back and forth between Oaxaca and Ojinaga on a fairly regular basis. Indian women use them for carrying their babies, or for carrying about anything else, actually. Tarahumara Indian women who can afford them use these also. They buy them from the "Marias" usually in Chihuahua City. But the "Marias" bring them up from Oaxaca. These are very popular with women these days because you can breast feed a baby in most any situations without anyone seeing. This is actually the most ideal and comfortable way to carry a baby that was ever invented.

Also, in terms of fashion, Frida Kahlo wore these, and they are coming very much into style as women adapt mores such as hers. This has tassles woven in the ends, or "barbitas" as they are called in Spanish. I have been selling a lot of these wholesale to shops that cater to midwives and people into promoting natural birthing and breastfeeding. One shop owner assured me that my price was way cheaper than what she had been able to locate anywhere else, and she had been looking hard! A major catalog company had them "marked down - 50% off" at 100 dollars each! This is brand new, clean, and in excellent condition. These rebozos from my latest collection are all between three meters (120 inches) long, or else I have another set where they are five meters long (200 inches), so that they can be used for carrying a baby safely.

I am asking 22.95 for the shorter rebozos and 25.99 for the longer ones. Write to me and I will tell you if a certain pattern is still available or not, at rebozos@faustosgallery.com

By the way, the term "Maria", is considered by some Americans to be a racist term (in Mexico it is not). An expert on the subject is Elizabeth Uribe Diaz who can give you a dissertation on the topic if you are interested. Write to her at eurivera@yahoo.com

Maria Elena Velasco is a Mexican film star whose character "La India Maria" was created in order to put a human face on the masses of Mexican Indians - particularly women - who are the victims of racist treatment. It is difficult to find much in the way of serious biographical material on this important cultural figure, although a lot of web pages exist promoting her movies.
