Gothic Skull Bead Rosary
This is another mad but purposeful rendition of the content of the mind of that self-styled "King of Taco Deco", Bryant "Eduardo" Holman, of Fausto's Art Gallery, in Ojinaga, Chihuahua. If anyone thinks there is something blasphemous about this, they are wrong - DEAD wrong!! After all, the Ave Maria is a prayer that reminds us of our mortality. The words say "Pray for us now and at the hour of Our Death". So the skulls help remind us about why we are praying in the first place. Actually, the use of skulls in rosaries has always been commonplace, because legend has is that the True and Holy Cross of Our Lord was planted right over the grave of Adam, and more specifically, right over his skull.
I use the colors that are associated with the famous and intriguing Mexican "folk saint", the Santisima Muerte, who is believed to be, in reality, a mesoamerican Goddess whose cult has survived into the "Christian" era. Although she is officially "banned" by the Catholic church, many Mexican curanderas, nevertheless, continue to appeal to her for aid in the spells they perform and their conjuring.
